The changing of lights
The only constant is change
There is a lot of opportunity still in the business of retrofitting to LED, resistance to the cost is easy to overcome by outlining the difference in longevity of LED, cost of ownership and maintenance and then comparing that to power hungry, inconsistent tradition lighting devices, then adding the cost of disposal as per EPA. If you know how to present it, LED wins hands down every time.
The technology has changed so fast with the ability to select different fixed color temperatures and even variable color temp LED fixtures.
It has been said “Women don’t light the color temp but men want the cost savings of LED”. Now the color temp can be softened and not reduce the longevity or cost savings. Some lighting contractors are still trying to discourage the change to LED because of the reduced infrastructure costs. The dirty little secret is that the cost savings of infrastructure for LED in breaker, wire gauges, number of circuits, no requirement for 277 or 480 + couple that with the cost of ownership for the next 10 years and it either totally offsets the initial layout of LED VS Traditional or it actually puts money in your pocket up front. But an electrical contractor is not going to tell you that. There is a lot of LED retrofit work but there are also opportunities in LED video wall technologies and architectural effect fixtures. With the technologies evolving so fast, this type of lighting isn’t just to illuminate anymore. There are control systems and fixtures that allow the control of l color temperature, hue, brightness and pulse via DMX either hardwired or wireless. These lights can now literally communicate. Dance to music, visualize alarms that specifically designate crisis’s from fire, break-in, medical emergencies.....etc.
